Love and Marriage...According To A 9 Year Old

Bryce (my 9 year old) and I have a lot of interesting conversations. Below is no exception:

Bryce: Mom, how old do you have to be in order to get married?

Me: Usually 18.

Bryce: Do people younger than 18 get married?

Me: Yes, but their parents have to sign a piece of paper saying that it's okay.

Bryce: So, you could actually get married at any age as long as your parents say it's okay?

Me: (Pause) Well, yes, I guess so.

Bryce: So, like a 4 year old could get married?

Me: Maybe, I don't know any parents who would sign off on that.

Bryce: If that's the case, I want to get married tomorrow.

Me: (shocked) To who? (Bryce tells me the girl's name. Sorry guys, I'm sworn to secrecy). Okay, well if you get married, you need to find a job so that you can support her.

Bryce: What? You mean I have to give her money? Oh man, I only have two bucks!

Me: Of course, you have to support her. I think you should wait to get married.

Bryce: Ok, maybe 3 more days... No, wait I wanna get married now! But I would have to leave the house.

Me: Yeah, you would need to move out.

Bryce: (Moving both his hands like a scale and weighing his options) Let's see wife versus family. Hmmm... Family wins. No wait, wife. I can still visit, right?

Me: Of course, you can visit. What makes you able to handle marriage?

Bryce: (Long pause) I'm a young, handsome boy who likes to play video games, like Uncle. I'm a loving man and I would treat her good. Like at bake sale, I loaned her a dollar and I told her she looked pretty at the Spring Concert. One thing about being married is being generous to your girl, right?

Me: Yes, you must be generous. Well I guess that's a start. But still, how are you going to afford a house?

Bryce: I can work with Ms. Gregory selling snacks and I'll make lots of money to buy a house. Great idea! Okay, let's sign those papers...

Wow, Bryce. If only it was that simple.

Bay to Breakers 2011

Last weekend,  my brother, sister-in-law, and I participated in Bay to Breakers in San Francisco. It is the largest foot race in history. Costumes are encouraged, so I wore Gavin's Thomas the Tank Engine Halloween costume. We took part in the time honored tradition of throwing tortillas in the air at the start line. The majority of the race was spent walking as we did not want to miss a thing. We saw many parties in the street, bazaar costumes, and a lot of naked runners.

Because it was Bay to Breaker's 100th race, we received medals ( just one more to add to the collection...now I have two). What an unforgettable day.

Thanks For My Mother's Day Gift...Now Where's The Gift Receipt?

Are you that mom who has to practice the "I love it" face in the mirror before receiving your Mother's Day gift? If you're looking to break the cycle and get something you actually want, have your family read this not-so-subtle list of Mother's Day gift no-no's.

1. A generic lotion and bath set. In your bathroom cabinet, you'll find a sea of old lotions that you hate. What mother of little kids has that much time to sit in a bath?
2. A hideous sweater that's two sizes too small. Great. I wouldn't be caught dead in this thing and I feel fat!
3. A gift that your husband or kids really want like a new drill or video game.
4. The same bad gift, five years in a row.
5. A loaf of bread. Yes, a loaf of bread. This actually happened to someone:
"The worst Mother's Day gift I received was a Trader Joe's brown paper bag with a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread in it. I don't even like cinnamon raisin bread—he does!! I cried. My husband said he forgot and Trader Joe's was the only place open on Sunday morning. Cripes! He could have gone to the grocery store and bought a bouquet of flowers."
6. Anything related to domestic duties. I love a clean and organized house, but please don't interpret that as a green light to give me  a steam cleaner, a juicer, salt and pepper shakers, a pot holder, or a step ladder.
7.Anything with 'World's Best Mom' printed on it. It's a nice sentiment from your kids. However, are you really gonna sport that mug or t-shirt in public?
8. A scale. No explanation necessary.
9. Any "as seen on TV" item. It was intriguing on TV, but I don't want a Snuggie, Bump-It, Shake Weight, or Pajama Jeans.
10. A lovely dinner (that you have to cook and clean up)

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
